Carbide also known as calcium carbide, solid form, grey, dark grey or dark brown in colour, with an odour similar to garlic. A substance that, in contact with water, emits flammable gases which may self-ignite. A precursor and intermediate for synthesis, a semi-finished product for the production of acetylene and calcium cyanamide. Used in the metallurgical industry for desulfurization of hot metals in smelting furnaces and in iron and steel foundries, for welding, in carbide lamps, and in moisture analysers. Bulk density 800–900 kg/m³. The substance is intended for professional use. The goods are subject to ADR regulations.

Classification of the substance or mixture
In accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008
Water-react. 1 – Substances and mixtures which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases, hazard category 1 with assigned hazard statement:
hazard category 1 with assigned hazard statement:
H260 In contact with water releases flammable gases which may self-ignite
Skin Irrit. 2 – Skin corrosion/irritation hazard category 2 with assigned
hazard statement:
H315 Causes skin irritation
Eye Dam. 1 – Serious eye damage/eye irritation hazard category 1 with assigned
hazard statement: H318 Causes serious eye damage
STOT SE 3 – Specific target organ toxicity – single exposure hazard category 3,
respiratory tract irritation with assigned hazard statement:
H335 May cause respiratory irritation
Physical/chemical hazards: in contact with water or moist air, it undergoes rapid,
exothermic decomposition, releasing flammable, explosive gas – acetylene and forming
calcium hydroxide. Acetylene released even in small quantities may cause an explosion
when opening containers.
Health hazard: carbide dust irritates the surface of moist skin or mucous
membranes and may cause damage to them; calcium oxide in contact with moist skin acts corrosively on tissues
Environmental hazard: in contact with water, in addition to acetylene, calcium hydroxide is formed, causing
an increase in water pH
Fire hazard: the product in contact with water releases flammable and explosive gas – acetylene
